Botswana is one of Africa’s last great wildlife strongholds, a place of extraordinary biodiversity and untouched landscapes. It is home to thriving predator populations, including large numbers of lion, leopard and some of the continent’s highest densities of wild dog. Rare antelope such as sable, red lechwe and sitatunga roam its floodplains, while the arid regions support desert specialists like oryx, brown hyena and habituated meerkats. Birdlife is equally impressive, with vast heronries teeming with storks, herons, and countless waterbirds.

The Kalahari is more than just the world’s largest unbroken stretch of sand; it is a land of contrasts, where salt pans shimmer under the sun, ancient baobabs stand sentinelVand black-maned lions patrol fossil river valleys. It is also home to the San people, who have lived in harmony with this landscape for millennia.

At the heart of Botswana lies the Okavango Delta, a vast inland oasis that transforms with seasonal floods. This labyrinth of channels, floodplains and islands supports an astonishing variety of wildlife, from elephants wading through papyrus-lined waterways to tiny reed frogs clinging to water lilies.

To preserve its wilderness, Botswana has embraced a low-impact, high-value tourism model. Scattered across private reserves and concessions are exclusive lodges offering seclusion and exceptional wildlife encounters. For those seeking more budget-friendly options, the national parks and public reserve such as Chobe and Moremi offer spectacular game viewing, while mobile tented safaris provide an affordable way to explore this remarkable country.

BOTSWANA ATTRACTIONS
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT BOTSWANA

Botswana is a year-round destination, with each season offering unique experiences. Whether you're interested in wildlife safaris, exploring the Okavango Delta, or enjoying desert landscapes, Botswana’s diverse ecosystems cater to a variety of interests. May – October: The Best Time for Safaris The dry season from May to October is considered the best time for safaris in Botswana. As water sources become scarcer, animals gather around the remaining waterholes, making it easier to spot wildlife. Temperatures are mild during the day, though mornings and evenings can be chilly. This is prime time for game viewing in areas like the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, and Makgadikgadi Pans. The Zebra Migration (January – March) From January to March, the zebra migration takes place in the Makgadikgadi Pans, where hundreds of thousands of zebras travel to the wetland areas to breed. This seasonal event offers a unique wildlife experience, with predators following the herds. It’s a fascinating time to visit for those interested in the migration phenomenon. November – April: The Green Season The green season, from November to April, brings rain and lush landscapes to Botswana. While the weather can be humid and temperatures higher, this is a great time for birdwatching, as migratory birds arrive. The Okavango Delta and Kalahari Desert come alive with new plant growth, attracting a wide range of wildlife. However, access to some areas may be limited due to rains. Mid-Summer Closures and Accessibility (November – April) From November to April, some remote areas in Botswana may experience limited accessibility due to heavy rains. While some camps in the Okavango Delta and other regions may close or offer limited services, this period still offers unique experiences, including fewer tourists and lush landscapes for photography. June – November: The Best Time for the Okavango Delta and Chobe The dry season from June to November is the best time to explore the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. The lower water levels make it easier to spot wildlife, and the cooler temperatures make for a comfortable safari experience. Boat safaris in the Okavango Delta and game drives in Chobe are especially rewarding during this time. April – May: The Best Time for Victoria Falls If you are going to Botswana, add Victoria Falls onto your journey. While Victoria Falls is a must-see year-round, visiting in April and May after the rains gives a particularly dramatic view of the falls at their fullest, when the Zambezi River reaches its peak flow. Botswana offers incredible wildlife and natural beauty throughout the year, but the dry season (May to October) provides the best conditions for safaris, while the green season (November to April) offers a quieter, more peaceful experience with lush landscapes and abundant birdlife.
