Moremi Game Reserve

The Heart of the Delta

Located in the eastern section of the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve is one of Africa’s most renowned wildlife sanctuaries. Established in 1963 as one of the first reserves to be set aside by local people, Moremi offers a stunning blend of wetland and dryland ecosystems. The reserve is a haven for wildlife, from the Big Five to diverse bird species, and provides some of the most accessible and rewarding safari experiences in Botswana.

Wildlife

  • Home to Africa's Big Five – lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinos.

  • High concentrations of wild dogs, one of Africa's rarest predators.

  • Rich in large herbivores such as giraffes, zebras, and antelope, as well as predators like hyenas and cheetahs.

  • Birdwatching haven, with over 500 species recorded, including African fish eagles, Ple's Fishing owls, pelicans, wattled cranes and Lilac-breasted rollers.

  • The sitatunga, a rare semi-aquatic antelope, is also frequently spotted in the lush waterways of the reserve.

Activities

  • Mokoro Safaris: Glide silently through narrow channels in a traditional dugout canoe, offering a close-up view of aquatic wildlife.

  • Game Drives: Explore the Delta’s drier areas in open 4x4 vehicles, where lions, leopards, and elephants roam.

  • Walking Safaris: Led by expert guides, these offer an immersive bush experience in private concessions.

  • Boating & Fishing: Seasonal motorboat cruises allow exploration of deeper channels, with catch-and-release fishing available in some areas.

  • Horseback Safaris: Ride through the Delta on horseback for an intimate and unique safari experience. Explore diverse landscapes, from floodplains to woodlands.

  • Helicopter Flights: Aerial safaris provide breathtaking views of the Delta’s vast waterways and wildlife movements.

Accommodation

  • Luxury Safari Lodges: Exclusive, high-end lodges offering top-tier service, private plunge pools, and fine dining.

  • Tented Camps: Intimate and eco-friendly, blending comfort with an authentic bush experience.

  • Mobile Safaris: For adventurous travellers, these lightweight camps move with the wildlife for a truly wild experience.

  • Budget-Friendly Options: Some camps offer more affordable stays, but most Delta accommodation is high-end due to its remote nature.

Getting there

  • By Air: Most visitors fly into Maun or Kasane, then take a light aircraft transfer to their lodge’s airstrip.

  • By Road: Limited access by 4x4 in certain areas during the dry season, particularly from nearby reserves.

  • By Boat: Some lodges and mobile safaris use boats to access floodplain areas.

Weather & when to visit

  • Dry Season (May–October): The best time for game viewing, with animals gathering around water sources. The reserve is at its most accessible, and the bush is sparse, making it easier to spot wildlife.

  • Green Season (November–April): The landscape comes alive with greenery and wildlife, particularly for birdwatchers. While the rains may cause some roads to be impassable, the wildlife is more dispersed, making it a quieter time to visit.
