Khama Rhino Sanctuary

Spirit of Conservation

Located in the Boteti District of central Botswana, the Khama Rhino Sanctuary is a 4,300-hectare sanctuary dedicated to the preservation of rhinos. Established in 1992, the sanctuary aims to protect both black and white rhino populations and serves as a vital part of the country's conservation efforts. It is a beacon of successful rhino conservation in Africa, offering a rare opportunity to observe these magnificent animals in the wild. The sanctuary also features a variety of other wildlife species and is a great place to experience the beauty of Botswana's grssslands.

Wildlife 

  • Rhinos – The sanctuary is home to both black and white rhinos, which are carefully monitored and protected. The sanctuary has seen significant success in increasing rhino populations, contributing to the global effort to protect these endangered species.

  • Antelope Species – Visitors can see a range of antelope species, including springbok, impala, kudu, and gemsbok, which roam the savannah.

  • Large Mammals – While not as large as some of Botswana's bigger national parks, Khama Rhino Sanctuary is home to giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest.

  • Predators – The sanctuary is home to a number of predators, including cheetahs, jackals, and wild dogs, although sightings can be less frequent.

  • Birdlife – The sanctuary is an excellent spot for birdwatchers, with a wide variety of species found throughout the year.

Getting there

  • By Air: Charter flights from Maun or Kasane to airstrips near Nxai Pan.

  • By Road: 4x4 required; the park is accessible from Maun or Nata, but deep sand can make driving challenging.

Weather & when to visit

  • Wet Season (December–April): Peak wildlife season, with lush landscapes, zebra migrations, and great birding.

  • Dry Season (May–October): Animals gather at waterholes, but game viewing is less dense than in the wet season.
