Central Kalahari Game Reserve

Untamed Heartland

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is one of the largest and most remote protected areas in Africa, covering 52,800 km² of Botswana’s semi-arid heartland. This vast wilderness is characterised by rolling sand dunes and open grasslands.  Despite its harsh environment, the reserve is teeming with life, particularly during the rainy season when it transforms into a lush, game-rich paradise.  It's a destination for true wilderness lovers, offering remote landscapes, extraordinary wildlife, and a glimpse into ancient human history. Whether drawn by the mighty black-maned lions, the vast open plains, or the chance to experience Africa’s raw beauty, CKGR is one of Botswana’s most untouched safari gems.

Wildlife

  • Predators: The CKGR is home to black-maned Kalahari lions, as well as cheetahs, leopards, and brown hyenas.

  • Rare Species: Look out for elusive aardwolves, bat-eared foxes, pangolins, and honey badgers.

  • Large Herbivores: Springbok, oryx (gemsbok), and eland dominate the landscape, along with giraffes and zebras.

  • Seasonal Migrations: During the green season (December–April), thousands of animals move into the reserve, attracting an influx of predators.

  • Birdlife: Over 250 bird species, including secretary birds, pale chanting goshawks, and lappet-faced vultures.
